Two ways to conceptualize the link between memory and time.
Dr. Signy Sheldon, McGill Psychology
Time is an essential aspect of conscious memory, yet the conceptualization of time and the link to memory is ambiguous. In this talk, I will review two ways that cognitive psychology has studied the link between time and memory. First, I will talk about research that conceptualizes time as a tool to distinguish when events occurred during an individual’s lifetime. Here, I will discuss neurocognitive similarities and differences between recalling autobiographical memories from recent and remote life-time periods. Second, I will discuss research that conceptualizes time as something that is experienced. Here, I will a recent study that examined the influence of memory processing on the way time is experienced. I will end with an open discussion on the concepts of ‘memory’ and ‘time’.
