The Department of Medical Social Sciences (MSS) at Northwestern Univ/Feinberg School of Medicine is the home to the PROMIS outcome measurement system and extensive psychometric expertise. Beyond measure development, MSS researchers focus on _use of patient-reported_ _measures_, both in clinic and at home, by patients and their treating clinicians. To serve this expanding PRO implementation research agenda, we seek an Assistant/Associate Professor with expertise in *patient-centered health communication and informatics/user experience*. The Department of Medical Social Sciences (MSS), Feinberg School of Medicine, Northwestern University invites applications for a new position as a team scientist (assistant to associate professor) in the area of *patient-centered health communication and user experience with information systems*. Northwestern Medicine (NM) is an integrated healthcare system of 7 hospitals anchored by a premier academic medical center in the 3^rd largest city in the US. As we live and work in the diverse community of Chicago and engage with a very diverse patient population, we are uniquely interested in those with a strong interest in matters of diversity & inclusion. NM has made a substantial investment in health information technology, including a specialized emphasis on patient-centered health and the use of patient-reported data to improve care. We are seeking a scientist with an *early or established research program in user experience with informatics and health communication to understand best practices in the design and use of patient- and clinician-facing health information data collection and reporting tool*s. Expertise and/or working familiarity is expected in the following areas:
* Patient and clinician (user) experience with informatics to optimize health communication * Collection, reporting, and use of patient-generated data in diverse clinic and population health settings * Patient engagement with data in treatment planning, shared decision-making, and self-management * Patient and clinician experience with measurement, analysis and interpretation * Clinical informatics and health information technology
MSS was established in 2009 in the Feinberg School of Medicine to provide a unique scientific home for applied researchers who integrate biomedical and social science approaches to improvement of health and health care delivery across the lifespan. Under the leadership of its founding chair, David Cella, the Department has grown to a faculty of fifty organized under the umbrella of four scientific hubs: Outcomes and Measurement Science, Lifespan Health Promotion, Mechanisms of Health & Disease, and Health Equity. Of particular relevance to this position is MSS’ extensive patient-centered research portfolio built around the Department’s international scientific leadership in NIH-wide patient-reported outcomes (PROMIS) and other standardized measurement initiatives. MSS provides rich resources for conducting research including a broad scientific portfolio with multiple, large scale datasets across the lifespan, biostatistical and health informatics cores, and serving as a collaborative bridge across Northwestern’s campuses. The candidate will also have extensive opportunities for collaboration within Northwestern’s Institute for Public Health and Medicine (IPHAM).
The Department of Medical Social Sciences exists uniquely to evaluate deeply the characteristics of those at risk for or those affected by disease. Successful patient centered research addresses the fullest extent of the patient experience which is inclusive of race, ethnicity, gender and sexual orientation. It is our goal to have an exemplary Department of Medical Social Sciences that understands the deep cultural roots of patients and reflects through our own diversity the patients we study and serve. We prioritize those candidates who possess a facile awareness of varied populations either by experience or by study. Candidates from diverse backgrounds are therefore strongly encouraged.
Applicants with activity or interest in any clinical area (disease or specialty) are encouraged to apply, with special local existing interest and activity in oncology, cardiology, rheumatology, neurology, orthopedic surgery, urology, organ transplantation, and pediatrics. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated an innovative programmatic approach to his/her research in qualitative methods, psychometrics, assessment, and or psychological/social science measurement with a special emphasis on health applications of quantitative methodology. Candidates should have an early or emerging track record of extramural funding and publications in applied user experience methodology. MSS has a highly collaborative culture in which multiple investigators work in tandem on large-scale, team science research. A critical consideration will be the extent to which the candidates' focus is synergistic with ongoing Departmental research and culture of collaboration. Collaborative orientation and skills in interdisciplinary and team science are important. All faculty at MSS are valued members of the research enterprise and are encouraged to participate at multiple levels in ongoing research. Thus, we are seeking an energetic, flexible and engaged scientist with an entrepreneurial spirit. Participation in Departmental teaching/ training activities and University service are also expected and valued.
