VA
MIRECC Advanced Fellowship Program in
Mental
Illness Research and Treatment
VA
Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System
Co-Directors:
Michael F. Green, PhD and Robert S. Kern, PhD
Overview:
The
MIRECC at the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare Center is
recruiting psychologists (or other associated health
fellows) for a two-year fellowship program. The primary goal of the program is to
train psychologists to become leading clinical researchers
in psychotic disorders. The fellowship combines
individual mentored research and clinical training with
state-of-the-art educational experiences. A special
emphasis of the fellowship program is to train fellows to
conduct translational research that brings basic science
to clinical practice.
Program
Description: The
opportunities for training will reside in the research,
clinical, and educational programs at the West Los Angeles
Division of the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System,
the units of the MIRECC, and the Semel Institute for
Neuroscience and Human Behavior at UCLA. The MIRECC
research programs are internationally recognized in a broad
range of research areas including cognitive neuroscience,
electrophysiology, neuropsychology, cognitive behavioral
therapy, psychosocial interventions, cognitive remediation,
psychiatric rehabilitation, clinical psychopharmacology,
health services, and implementation science. The
Co-Directors and the MIRECC faculty have a strong commitment
to translational research that links basic science to
clinical research and clinical research to services
research.
Faculty: MIRECC faculty
members (and their research interests) include: Michael F.
Green, Ph.D. (cognitive neuroscience, functional outcome);
William P. Horan, Ph.D. (social cognition, emotion
processing, negative symptom assessment); Robert S. Kern,
Ph.D. (neuropsychology, cognitive rehabilitation,
psychiatric rehabilitation, social cognition); Shirley
Glynn, Ph.D.(cognitive behavioral therapy, family
interventions, psychosocial treatment research); Stephen R.
Marder, M.D. (clinical psychopharmacology, pharmacological
and psychosocial interventions); Alexander S. Young, M.D.,
M.S.H.S. (health services, quality of care, implementation
science); Amy N. Cohen, Ph.D. (health services, family
interventions).
Eligibility
Requirements: Eligible
psychologists (or associated clinicians) must be U.S.
citizens. They must have graduated from an American
Psychological Association (APA) accredited doctoral program
in clinical or counseling psychology (or an equivalent
program in another discipline). Completion of an APA
accredited internship in clinical or counseling psychology
is also required.
How to Apply:
Interested
psychologists (or associated clinicians) who meet the
eligibility requirements should send a cover letter and
curriculum vita to Robert Kern, Ph.D. (e-mail: rkern@ucla.edu).
The cover letter should specify the reasons for your
interest in this particular fellowship training program, a
brief overview of your previous clinical and research
experiences, and how you see this program promoting your
professional and career goals.
Other
Information: Our fellowship is
an equal opportunity training program. Hence, we strive to create a diverse
training group and consider minority status to be a
beneficial factor in achieving this goal. Thus, we give
weight to minority status in our selection rankings. Our
fellowship program has applied for APA accreditation which
is currently under review. Applications are
currently being accepted for the postdoctoral fellowship
position beginning in September 2016.
